Ultimate feminist girl crush: Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz.
Feminist, poet, author, philosopher, scientist, mathematician, genius.
She was one of the most forward thinking individuals of her time. At a young age, she decided she would take the only independent route a woman could take at her time: becoming a nun. She spent her time studying all subjects, but much of her prominent study was on gender roles, specifically for women. Most of her works are still so relevant today, including her criticism on how men want a woman to be both promiscuous and virtuous (prude/virgin), aka the double standard of being desirable.
If you know Spanish, please read her sonnets in their original language. They are breathtakingly beautiful and enlightening.
Whether you know Spanish or not, get your hands on a copy of “La respuesta” (The Response).
